Gardens have a way of slowing us down and reconnecting us with nature. Our family loves to visit these local treasures when we are home or away. Fortunately, we have many gardens to choose from here in San Diego and the surrounding areas but one in particular we love to visit is the San Diego Botanic Garden in Encinitas, CA. The garden has a very organic and natural feel…nothing fussy or overdone. Our favorite places to visit in the garden are the butterfly and herb garden, and the lively lily pond with curious turtles and frogs. Each space is quaint and uniquely marked and feels it could be in your very own backyard. There is something for everyone. For the horticultural enthusiasts, plants are clearly marked and defined by region and for the kids, there is a fun play area (currently blocked off due to COVID restrictions) and the staff are always friendly, helpful and knowledgeable.

We are big believers in memberships at our own local parks and museums because not only does it help the local community, but it gives you a chance to enjoy these places anytime at your own leisure. We enjoy our membership here and per the website includes “general admission for two adults in the same household and their children (and/or grandchildren) under the age of 18”. It also includes two guest passes for the year. But one great benefit of this membership that I love is entrance to over 300 gardens around the country affiliated with the American Horticultural Society’s Reciprocal Admissions Program. For example, the Japanese Friendship Garden in Balboa Park, San Diego and for our AZ friends, the Japanese Friendship Garden and Desert Botanical Garden in Phoenix all have reciprocal agreements. All the gardens across the US are listed on their website.
So, whether you live here or visiting and need a little space, I highly recommend adding to your schedule a stroll through the gardens. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes and bring water as the café is closed during COVID restrictions.
Cheers,
Lisa
